Today, let's dive into a handful of certifications. Keep in mind that this isn't an exhaustive list – there are more out there, and if you're familiar with any that I haven't mentioned, drop a comment! I'd love to expand the knowledge base with your insights.

These certifications are key for many designers, depending on the type of design they specialize in. While the world of sustainable and wellness design boasts numerous acronyms (some of which may still be off my radar), the ones I'm sharing are the ones I've encountered and worked with personally.

  1. ADA (American with Disabilities Act):

    • Focus: Construction industry.

    • What it's about: A federal civil rights law ensuring equal opportunities for people with disabilities. It covers everything from employment to goods and services.

  2. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council):

    • Where you've seen it: Paper products in grocery stores, but they're involved in much more – from tires to home decor.

    • Mission: Supporting forests and communities through zero deforestation, fair wages, and more.

  3. Energy Star:

    • Common sighting: Refrigerators, computer monitors, TVs – a voluntary labeling program promoting energy-efficient products.

  4. LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design):

    • Use: National green building rating system for both commercial and residential buildings.

  5. NAHB (National Association of Home Builders - Green Building Standard):

    • Specifics: Applies to multi-family, single-family, and residential remodels. Ratings range from Bronze to Platinum, focusing on various aspects like water efficiency and site lot design.

  6. Greenguard:

    • Mission: A not-for-profit organization ensuring indoor products meet air-quality standards through their certification program.

  7. Greenseal:

    • Role: A non-profit establishing environmental standards for products, promoting eco-friendly production and purchasing.

  8. SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative):

    • Mission: Charitable organization promoting sustainable forest management.

  9. WaterSense:

    • Initiative: United States EPA program helping identify water-efficient products and programs.

  10. MBDC Cradle to Cradle (C2C):
